AP-Hamlet Reading Schedule

As you do each reading, mark up the text as we discussed in class: text coding, color marking, etc. After reading, choose four of your selections (no more than a few lines each) to copy into and examine in more detail in your Double Entry Journal; use your markups to help you generate an interpretation of the quotations you choose. We will use these entries to guide our daily discussions and Socratic seminars, and they will be collected on occasion and without notice, for credit.

AP: Hamlet Essay Directions

motif: a recurring object, concept, or structure in a work of literature. A motif may also be two contrasting elements in a work, such as good and evil.  A motif is important because it allows one to see main points and themes that the author is trying to express, in order that one might be able to interpret the work more accurately.

Throughout your reading of Hamlet, in the course of your note taking, be alert to motifs that Shakespeare employs to develop his bigger ideas.  At the end of the unit, in place of an open essay, you will write a thesis essay showing the development of one motif and explaining how it contributes to the development to a thematic idea in the play.  Your reader response posts may or may not be on motifs as you see them; that’s up to you, but you must be looking for them right from the beginning.  Watching for repetition is the key to recognizing a motif.  Your interpretive skills will determine the meaningfulness of the motif and if it is part of a thematic idea in the work.

Your essay should be 750-1000 words, double spaced Times New Roman font.  It is worth 200 points, and it must be submitted to turnitin.com by 7am on Wednesday 4/19.  You must include quotations from the text to show the development of the motif throughout the play, and each must be cited parenthetically by act, scene and line (4.2.36-48).

HAMLET

For each reading assignment you are to come to class with your text, well annotated, and at least one significant quote from the assignment.  A quote is significant if it illuminates the text in a thematic way.  You are trying to improve your ability to find meaning as you read and build a bank of memorable quotations that could be brought with you to the exam in May and with you throughout life.  Yes, believe it or not, people do quote famous lines from literature in everyday life, especially lines from Shakespeare.  There are large passage quizzes within the unit, as noted.

You are also following motifs throughout your reading of the play, so watch for repletion of imagery and ideas, and begin to formulate thematic ideas based on their pattern of usage .
